12 Barrels produced
Sourced from a certified sustainable vineyard located in southern San Joachin County, this small production vintage represents Picchetti’s very first Barbera (pronounced bar-BEH-rah.) While uncommon in the United States, this ancient grape dates back to the 7th Century, and is considered the quintessential “wine of the people” in its ancestral home of Piedmont in Northern Italy. It is both rich and light-bodied, with a deep ruby color, pronounced acidity and modest levels of mouth-drying tannins. Aged for 18-months in a combination of 33% new French oak and 66% neutral oak, this vintage offers alluring scents of just baked berry pie, sour cherry, dried strawberry and fresh herbs. The first sip delivers an avalanche of stewed fruit, blood orange, savory rhubarb and black tea flavors, and there’s a hint of raspberry creme and white pepper on the soft yet elongated finish. It’s bright acidity and low alcohol content will complement an array of rich, fatty and high tannin foods. Enjoy it with everything from hearty meat dishes, Cioppino, porcini mushrooms, root vegetables, braised greens and herbaceous cheeses such as Gorgonzola. It is deliciously approachable now, but will continue to give tasting pleasure through 2025. Another Picchetti first!
